Junior Summer Athletics

In Summer we have our exciting weekly Athletics Events at the Track. Children are grouped by their ages, and they get to try one run, jump, and throw each Club Night. Many are new at athletics, so most of the Summer is simply practice at each event.

We coach co-ordination skills, sprints, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, and discus. Athletics is great for overweight children, with a wide variety of activities to get them active. They might not be sprinters, but could do well in throwing. It’s not about comparing yourself to others, but working on your own improvements.

At season end, we record their best achievements for you to compare on a yearly basis to measure improvement. There are free Ribbon Days around the district open to all athletics child members. Ribbon Days are at the very social end of competition, held each Saturday around the district. You don’t need to pay or sign up, you just rock up and take part. The aim is to get children involved, no matter their ability, so most do get ribbons.

Athletics Holiday Program – October Boot Camp

During the Oct school holidays, we have a fantastic 4-day Boot Camp at the track. This is fantastic pre-season warmup and skill reminder. Also excellent for those just starting athletics, but who have already shown some ability in other sports, and are planning to compete over the coming season. Ages 7-15yrs, 9am-3pm daily.

Great Coaches and Role Models

Our Kids’ Coaches are usually senior athletes, retired members, or parents who have spent time learning the sport. They are volunteers who enjoy teaching and watching children develop their motor skills to become confident young athletes of their own right. It’s great to see a child come out of their shell and give it their all!

Competitions – Family Holiday with your kids at the Colgate Games!

Some children find one or two events they are naturally good at, and often take up our free extra coaching. There are various Competitions to attend, such as Waikato-BOP Champs, Interprovincials, the Twilight Event and Relay Champs.

Each year in January, Athletics NZ hold the Colgate Games for those kids who would like to move up to competing with other children around New Zealand. This is another great family affair, as most parents usually take 3-4 days off to have a holiday away while supporting their kids in something they enjoy. In 2011 the games were in Hastings, where the Splash Planet pools got a thorough splashing!

“I enjoy watching my times improve, even though it’s slow, I know I am definitely getting fitter for me.”

“The best thing about being a Lake City runner is that I really enjoy my food again. I now fit the same clothes I wore 20 years ago!”

Kerris Browne

“I am a retired Marathon Runner but I still race walk almost every day. My biggest buzz is helping those who don’t think they can do it, and seeing the excitement on their faces when they realize they can.”
