Track and Field

Junior Summer Athletics

In Summer we have our exciting weekly Athletics Events at the Track. Children are grouped in their age group, and they get to try one run, jump, and throw. Many are new at athletics, so most of the Summer is simply practice at each event.

We coach co-ordination skills, sprints, middle distance, long jump, high jump, shot put, and discus. Athletics is great for overweight children, with a wide variety of activities to get them active. They might not be sprinters, but do well in throwing.

At season end, we record their best achievements for you to compare on a yearly basis to measure improvement. There are free Ribbon Days around the district open to all athletics child members. The aim is to get children involved, no matter their ability, so most do get ribbons.

Great Coaches and Role Models

Our Kids’ Coaches are usually senior athletes, retired members, or parents who have spent time learning the sport. They are volunteers who enjoy teaching and watching children develop their motor skills to become confident young athletes of their own right. It’s great to see a child come out of their shell and give it their all!

Family Holiday with your kids at the Colgate Games

Some children find one or two events they are naturally good at, and often take up our free extra coaching.

Each year in January, Athletics NZ hold the Colgate Games for those kids who would like to move up to competing with other children around New Zealand. This is another great family affair, as most parents usually take 3-4 days off to have a holiday away while supporting their kids in something they enjoy.

In 2011 the games were in Hastings, where the Splash Planet pools got a thorough splashing!

Testimonials

“I enjoy watching my times improve, even though it’s slow, I know I am definitely getting fitter for me.”

Rachel Browne

“The best thing about being a Lake City runner is that I really enjoy my food again. I now fit the same clothes I wore 20 years ago!”

Kerris Browne
Office Manager

“I am a retired Marathon Runner but I still race walk almost every day. My biggest buzz is helping those who don’t think they can do it, and seeing the excitement on their faces when they realize they can.”

Colin Smyth
Plumber

“It’s fantastic that my [heavier built] daughter has finally found something she enjoys and doesn’t feel useless at. She’s doing great in discus and enjoys high jump.”
